During this year’s Art Tour of Zuienkerke, the historic Church of Houtave will open its doors to art lovers, offering a unique blend of heritage, symbolism and contemporary creativity.

The Church of Saint Bavo in Houtave dates back to the 11th century and is one of the oldest and best-preserved Romanesque churches in West Flanders. With its simple yet serene architecture, the church has stood for centuries as a place of reflection and connection – a fitting setting for this year’s artistic statement on peace and humanity.

At the heart of the exhibition will be thousands of hand-folded paper cranes. These have been created and displayed in memoriam of the children that died in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The installation is a quiet but powerful tribute to innocence lost and a collective longing for peace.

The cranes were lovingly folded by many hands – from school children to elderly people, each contributing to this shared act of remembrance.Inspired by the Japanese tradition of senbazuru, where a thousand cranes are made in the hope of healing or granting a wish, this installation stands as a communal gesture of empathy and solidarity.

Alongside this moving tribute are Ingrid’s paintings. Her art invites introspection and connection, deepened by the spiritual setting and the gentle presence of the cranes.
